How Best Do You Learn?

Have you ever wondered why some people are so attentive in a class, while others, as much as they try, can hardly stay awake?

The answer lies in the differences in the way you learn.  There are 3 main types of learning styles out there.  Some experts go as far as explaining 7 different styles.  But for the sake of this post and introducing you to the basics, we will look at only the 3 main types.

  • Auditory learners

  • Visual learners and

  • Kinesthetic learners (Hands On)

Auditory learners are the students in your class who need absolute silence  because their ears are crucial to learning. You can spot them out because they are the ones asking everyone to “Be quiet!”. They learn best by hearing the lesson.

Visual learners are easily identified because when working on a project, they are the ones who create the beautiful charts, diagrams and power point presentations. Visual learners learn best by sight. As long as a visual learner can read through the lesson, they may need little to no explanation from a teacher.

Kinesthic learners are the students who is usually the most bored in the classroom setting traditionally used in the Bahamas. He or she must touch and feel the lesson.   Sometimes it is best if this person stands up  and walk around the class in order to take in the information better.   Field trips are an excellent way to learn the material. Unfortunately, our school system in the Bahamas does not cater strongly to the need of the kinesthetic learner.

Discovering your learning style empowers you to excel in your lessons. It relieves you from being entirely at the mercy of the traditional way of teaching.  You may find that you have a combination of learning styles but are stronger in one style over the next.

Follow this link and take the quiz to find out how best you learn.

So what about you? What is your learning style?

5 Reasons to Study with Flash Cards

Flash cards are one of the top 3 methods of study and is a favorite of mine.  Here I give you 5 great reasons to study for your BJC and BGCSE exams using flash cards.

1. Gets rid of empty time spaces

Flash cards are convenient for those occasions when you only have a short window of opportunity to review. For example, if you’re waiting on a long line, you can use that 15-20 minutes of empty waiting time to quickly review your notes.

2. Easy memorization

Because when you look at a flash card, your attention is strictly on the one card at a time, it allows for easy concentration. This makes flashcards ideal for memorization of formulas, graphs and pictures.

3. Compact

Although it is exam time, life does not end. You still have obligations like family affairs and special events. During that time, you don’t want to lug around a textbook or large notebook. Flash cards are compact and easy to carry around. They can be slipped into your pants pocket or in a purse for quick revision.

4. Easy testing

Sometimes, even parents are not the best testers when it comes to quizzing you, on foreign languages like Spanish and French. Flash cards are designed so that you can self test easily without cheating! Or if you like, you can create a question and answer competition amongst a group of friends.

5. Content reinforcement

The preparation of the cards is study in itself. By writing down your questions, answers and facts you are reinforcing your knowledge of your subject content.

How to Make Your Own Flashcards

Flashcards are ridiculously easy to make. First; you locate index cards or some heavy duty paper which you can cut to the size of 5 inches by 3 inches.
Secondly, on one side of the flash card, you write a question e.g. “In what year did the Bahamas obtain its independence?” and on the back you write the answer “1973”. It’s that simple. You can do this for all of your subjects.
I have not found any subject yet, that cannot be studied using flash cards.

What about you? Are there any special ways you study that works best?
